The American Academy of Equine Art
Establishing a Standard of Excellence in the Field of Equine Art

Workshops

In 1992, the American Academy of Equine Art, Inc. realized its original goal of becoming a teaching organization. Academy workshops are open to anyone interested in equine art, whether beginners or more experienced artists who wish to sharpen their skills. Instruction is offered in drawing, painting and sculpting. Our workshops fill a void that is not addressed by existing art schools today. They provide the opportunity for students to exchange ideas with a group of artists who share similar creative goals. Academy instructors are nationally renowned professionals selected for their merit as equine artists or their outstanding reputation in related genres.

Workshops are held at a variety of prestigious locations. These places offer healthy Equine subjects and the finest instructors available. In 2011, workshops will be held all over the United States.

2010 / 2011 WORKSHOPS

All workshop fees are $450 (unless otherwise noted) and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Note: there is a $75 non-refundable cancellation fee that applies after registration confirmation. AAEA Associates and Full Members receive a 20% discount off tuition. There is an early enrollment discount of 10% off tuition for any student enrolled 90 days prior to start of workshop. All workshops will take place in the Art Studio workshop, at the  Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky (unless otherwise noted).

"The atmosphere is fantastic and everyone is so friendly and helpful. I received more from this workshop than I have any other."

"I enjoyed the AAEA workshop because it had fewer students--less crowded and more one on one with the instructor."

"It was great! I learned so many things that haven't been mentioned in other workshops…"

Keeneland Fall Workshop (Mentoring program for Associates)
"The Pace of Equine Painting"
October 23 - 28, 2010
(only 8 spaces available)
Location: Keeneland

How many of us can turn out a quick masterpiece for an audience. I do it all the time - albeit my definition of masterpiece may be different from another person's!

Has this ever happened to you? You are in a workshop, and the instructor says, "At 12 we break for lunch and at three, we have a critique of your painting".

"Yipes"--you think--"this is nuts!"

The pace of a typical American Academy of Equine Art workshop can be tough for tortoises--the slow poke painters. Oil is traditionally though of as a slow medium--but nothing is slow at the beautifully landscaped Keeneland Racing and Sales Facility in Lexington KY. You will be outdoors, in the racetrack paddock-- taking in all the flavors of this exquisite location and painting to beat the band, for an audience. So gather your equipment and head to Lexington.

The tradition of speed will be reinforced as a virtue. You will have simple exercises, and two critiques a day. Your "up front and personal" instructor will keep your progress on track and a masterpiece of Equine art will emerge before your very eyes. You will go home with some grand new techniques. It's not important how long it took, but more that the results are good.

Saturday October 23rd - A Day at the Keeneland club house with box seats. This is dress-up day when you will have the opportunity to get your photo references and just have fun.

Sunday October 24th Paint in Paddock and other specified locations

Monday October 25th No races-paint in paddock

Tuesday October 26th No races-paint in paddock

Wednesday October 27th Paint in paddock and other specified locations

Thursday October 28th Final Day of painting and final Critique

Kathleen Friedenberg

Sculpture Workshop
"Understanding Structure"

October 25 - 29, 2010
Class time 9 - 5
Skill Level: All Levels
Location: Dawsonville, GA

This workshop will guide students in building a small equine figure through a systematic approach based on anatomical principles. Informal talks on anatomy will offer an understanding of basic skeletal and muscular structure as it relates to form and movement. As requested, she can also concentrate on heads and legs, for those who wish to do so. The class will progress from the building of an appropriate armature to the development of a complete structure in clay with students receiving individual attention.

Kathleen Friedenberg began her professional career as a veterinarian in England. She spent ten years as a freelance medical illustrator, during which she began to study sculpture. Her reputation as an equine sculptor is particularly strong in regard to correct anatomy, lively action, and often, humor. She is a Full Member of the AAEA and holds memberships in the Society of Animal Artists, the National Sculpture Society and the American Artists Professional League.
