“Painting Horses in Acrylic”

The workshop will begin with an introduction to acrylics as a medium, its exceptional versatility and its characteristics.  Even those students who have worked with the medium previously can benefit from the discussion.  The focus of the workshop will be the production of a painting or paintings from the preliminary drawing to the finished piece and will include demonstrations of a variety of techniques.  Because horses, unlike people, can’t be induced to pose over sustained periods, photographs will be necessary.  Students are encouraged to bring their own, though ample sources will be provided at the workshop as well.  A list of recommended materials will be provided in advance.

Instructor Michael Nevin, AAEA, has painted exclusively in acrylics since the early 1970s.  A graduate of the Cleveland Art Institute, he also studied at the San Francisco Art Institute.  He has exhibited in both regional and national competitions and has been the recipient of numerous awards.  His work has been represented by galleries in Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Kentucky.  He has been the subject of a cover article in Artist Magazine and is one of seven artists whose work is featured in “The Acrylic Painter’s Book of Styles and Techniques” (North Light Press).  His work has utilized traditional subject matter, primarily landscapes, urban and rural, with horses primarily over the last twenty-five years.
