AAEA - SUSAN LEYLAND

British by birth, Susan Leyland moved to Italy in 1973, making Florence her home. In 1998, she held her first exhibition of drawing and sculpture, the success of which launched her career as an artist.

Since then, Leyland has developed an individual and recognizable way of representing the horse in contemporary art. Her innovative Horse Block Sculptures and spheres, have been referred to as having a sense of “poetic lightness,” a sense that most likely stems from the relaxed and graceful compositions that she creates. Her horses exist; or rather prance within columns, which work to ground the sculpture while at the same time placing them upon a pedestal.

Leyland’s equine knowledge and love of horses, as well as her love of art, are visible when viewing her work. Susan frequently sketches to create new ideas, merging horses and situations to blocks and spheres. One of her recent projects is to create a number of unique equestrian sculptures for venues to be held by Lloyds TSB, an official sponsor, during the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Susan’s work can be found in both bronze and in the soft colours of the semi-refractory Italian artist clay. Each sculpture is a unique piece, signed “Leyland” and embossed with an “L.”

Leyland’s sculptures can be found in Florence in the Tornabuoni Gallery, London in the Alan Kluckow Gallery, Stockholm in the Galleri Hippo and in Santa Monica in the Cambridge Art Gallery, exclusive representative in the USA. 2009 Susan received Full Membership with the American Academy of Equine Art. www.cambridgeartgallery.com, www.equinesculptures.com
