A Founder of the American Academy of Equine Art, Inc., Sam is one
of America's best-known horse artists. He wrote 14 books and illustrated
well over 100 others. His illustrations have also appeared in many
leading national magazines. Sam graduated from Pratt Institute, studied
at the Art Students League and pursued his interest in horses and
horsemanship with the famous equestrian teacher Gordon Wright.
He
painted all breeds and every area of horse activity. His knowledge
of horses brought a reality and authority to his work and secured his
appointment as the official artist for the United States Equestrian
Team. The famous Sam Savitt Horse Charts are known throughout the world
and his authoritative work has been used in encyclopedias and by The
Smithsonian Institution.
His
paintings are in the collections of many well-known people including
Raymond Firestone, William Randolph Hearst, Jr., August Busch and members
of the Kennedy family to name a few.
Sam
was the Director of Painting at the Academy's school in Lexington,
Kentucky. Sam passed away in December 2000 and is survived by his wife
Bette.
